The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP's extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers.


ABOUT THE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER:


The Community Learning Center (CLC) empowers a diverse community of adult learners to transform their lives and realize their potential through education, skills development, and community participation. Learners are predominantly low-income Cambridge residents and come from a variety of ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds. Learners enroll in English classes or Adult Education for high school equivalency, employment training, or preparation for college. Classes meet 2 mornings or 2 evenings per week. ABOUT THE ROLE:

The CNA Reading Teacher position is a part-time position and the person to be hired is responsible for developing contextualized curriculum and teaching reading to students enrolled in the CNA for fluent English speakers training program seeking a career in the healthcare industry. The ideal candidate is a teacher who has a commitment to racial equity, an understanding of the challenges adult learners face, and a willingness to promote and advance the CLC's mission and core values.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are looking for a reading teacher who will:
  • Dynamically teach contextualized reading to adult learners in person.
  • Provide scaffolded, explicit instruction, practice, and assessment in reading to help students achieve career, and personal goals.
  • Develop/revise curriculum contextualized to the field of healthcare and based on the CLC curriculum.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Communicate with the Training Programs Coordinator/Advisor on student issues.
  • Keep records of student attendance.
  • Work as a team with teachers and staff of the CNA Training programs to share best practices.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to continually improve our services.
  • Additional duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Familiarity with postsecondary education, training programs and community resources.
  • Three years of experience teaching adults.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in adult basic education.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the adult learner population.
  • Strong organizational and technology skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

You may possess some, but not all of the following:
  • Experience developing and teaching contextualized curricula
  • Familiarity with the field of healthcare.
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience with remote instruction, digital literacy, and distance learning.
  • A passion for collaboration, problem-solving, and learning new things.
  • Experience teaching adults in a community-based setting.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS
  • The job requires regular daytime work.
  • General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting; work to be performed onsite.
  • There is extensive computer use. Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift and carry up to 5 pounds of books and papers.
